Cycladic Cup

Cup, from Thera. Dates around 1400 BC. Height 4 1/2 ins. National Museum, Athens. As I said before, I have a great appreciation for Ancient Greek pottery and in particular the pieces made by the Minoan and Cycladic potters. The cup illustrated above is one of my favorite pieces. It is a Cycladic cup from Thera and dates around 1400 BC. I love the playfulness of the bird and flowers and the delicate quality of the handle and tapered foot. I was so inspired by this piece that I started making cups with a similar shape, but not quite as narrow of a foot, and then I added the detail of the lines around the base of the cup. This shape and texture have since been incorporated into many of my other pieces.
